Smartt First Baptist Church

The First Bapist Church of Smartt started out in 1913.  The first name was Smartt Memoral Presbyterian Church in honor of General William Cheek Smartt, who was the first settler in the area in 1805.  We started with simply 13 members meeting in a small building.  Over the years, we have grown.  The first addition was added to the original building in 1952.  The building was vacated and stood empty until September of 1978 when Gath Baptist Church acquired the building to establish a mission church.  The church was started under the leadership of John Blevins and several supporting members of Gath Baptist Church.  The membership grew quickly.  In 1979, First Baptist Church of Smartt held its first service with Brother Jerry Robinson from Northside Baptist Church delivering the first service of the new church.  In 1980 the congregration outgrew the original building so a new building was erected including a new sanctuary with a full basement.  This gave the church additional space for more classrooms and a larger sanctuary for the growing congregration.  This extra room made way for the establishing of the Smartt Christian Academy for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  SCA opened with 20 students.  The school no longer exists but the space is still used to spread the Word of God.  

We are a Southern Baptist Church that is a part of the Tennessee Baptist Association.  

Our first pastor was Jerry Robinson.  Our current pastor is Johnny Newby.  He was named pastor on June 14, 2015.  He and his wife, Mary, have one son and daughter-in-law.

We have multiple ministries that work to spread the word in various ways.  We have activities for chidren to adults to bring people into our church to learn about the Lord and all he has done for us.
